State Spotlight: Colorado

Colorado is one of 5 states that adopted new surprise medical bill legislation in 2019. Colorado strengthened its previous law on surprise medical bill to become one of only 13 states nationwide with comprehensive protections for patients.

Colorado is unique because it is among the few states that has combined a payment standard with a dispute resolution process. The new law has a specific payment formula based on the insurer’s median in-network rate and allows for an arbitration process if a provider considers the payment to be inadequate.
